Euroblock, short for "European-style terminal block", is an extra-low voltage disconnectable (or plugable) connector and terminal block combination commonly used for microphone- and line level-audio signals, and for control signals.
It is also known as the Phoenix connector from one of the manufacturers, Phoenix Contact, a German company whose US operations were established in 1981 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; though there are many manufacturers who make compatible products. It is also known as "Combicon", which might be a Phoenix brand name; or more generically as a "pluggable terminal block" or a "two piece terminal block".
The Euroblock is a solderless connector that uses screw terminals to clamp connecting wires. Once the wires are installed, the entire assembly is plugged into a matching socket in the electronic device. Euroblocks are more convenient than the terminal strips they replace as the signal cables can be quickly disconnected from or connected to the electronic device, rather than unscrewing and re-screwing each wire individually.
Euroblock is a type of terminal block connector (see WFTD Terminal Strip) frequently seen on products used in the audio installation market. They feature an interlocking male and female style connector that often carries the same signals as a balanced XLR or TRS connector used most often in pro audio devices. The Euroblock style connector requires no soldering to make cable interconnections. Instead, the wire is stripped, inserted into slots in the connector, and then each wire is tightened into place with the aid of a standard screwdriver. They come in several sizes (number of terminals), as well as a few different shapes.
Euroblock plugs are parts used to connect signal wires (including audio and control system wires) mainly for audio devices on stationary equipment.
In locations with confined work spaces, it can be difficult to screw wires to terminal blocks (or barrier strips) attached to a device, whereas using Euroblock plugs can save time and trouble during installation by simply inserting a plug that already has wires fastened with screws .
NOTES:
Either single-core or multi-strand cables can be used, but do not plate stranded wire with solder because it can cause circuit breaks. Use a crimped rod terminal with an insulation sleeve for connections that are frequently disconnected/reconnected.
