They are often referred to as powered speakers because they have to be plugged into a socket or battery. Since the amplifier for active speakers is inside the speaker, the crossover circuit filters the signal before amplifying it. This is an advantage for several reasons, firstly when the crossover is in front of the amplifier, it means the signal for each driver will be amplified separately, also known as active bi-amping. In bi-amped active speakers, there is usually more power going to each driver than in passive speakers. In passive speakers when the signal passes through the crossover after being amplified, some of that power is dissipated in the crossover and never reaches the driver. This is not the case with active speakers because the signal is amplified after passing through the crossover.<\/p>\n<p>Bi-amping also means that the signal hits the tweeter and woofer simultaneously and thus reduces phase shift between drivers. What happens to active speakers is that the line level input signal is first separated into different frequency bands by an active crossover network. Each band then follows speaker level before driving the appropriate drivers (tweeters, woofers, etc.). Active crossover networks can be optimized better for sharing audio with share and precision as they don't really care about power handling. This is because they split the line level signal which is much lower in amplitude than the speaker level signal. Also, because each crossover band has its own amplifier, active speakers have the added benefit of being adjustable. Some active speakers will have an EQ section to match their sonic character.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Advantages of Active Speaker<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Active speakers are easier to tune and easier to set up. The crossover and its drivers are passive, working with passive electrical components and electromagnetism. These speakers receive amplified speaker level signals from the connected power amplifier. This power amplifier boosts the channel level signal from the audio source and\/or preamplifier to the speaker level signal. The speaker level signal is then divided into different frequency bands by a crossover unit before being sent to the appropriate driver. In a 2-driver speaker, high frequencies are sent from the crossover to the speaker's tweeter. All other frequencies are shared and sent to the woofer. In a 3-way speaker, the crossover splits the audio signal in 3 ways.<\/p>\n<p>It sends highs to tweeters, mids to midrange woofers, and lows to larger woofers. Power amplifiers and passive speakers must be properly paired for optimal performance. An amplifier that is too weak will not be able to drive the speaker to its full potential and will distort the signal even before the speaker is near its loudest sound. On the other hand, an overly powerful amplifier can overload the passive speaker crossover and driver components, causing speaker distortion and explosion. Advantages of Passive Speakers<\/p>\n<p><strong>Advantages of Passive Speakers<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Passive speaker systems are easier to upgrade because passive speakers and amplifiers are separate. We can upgrade speakers, amplifiers, cables, etc. without having to replace the entire system.
